Today we 3rd year students visited Mother studio in Shoreditch with Sara. Mother is a big creative advertising agency who create adverts for some major brands like KFC, IKEA, Calvin Klein, Moneysupermarket.com and many others. The visit was really interesting and the office was super cool!
Everyone was impressed by the place as soon as we entered the building. The coolest thing that we saw straight away was an enormous wall full of framed portraits. We were told that if you are hired to work at Mother, you will need to bring a picture of your mother and they will hang it on the wall. The picture will also be printed on your personal business card. I think that is such a lovely tradition. They said it has to do with their mission to make their moms proud.
The main office floor was amazing too! They have a relaxation zone full of green plant and natural light. So if you need a power nap or a moment alone that where you can go. How cool is that! I don’t think many workplaces have a nap room for their employees. At Mother you can bring your dog to work which is also pretty much unheard of at workplaces.
Also, the office area has a hugggeee concrete table! They said it used to be the biggest office table in the world until some place in the US beat them. I loved the table. It looks so rough and chunky and just amazing. In the back of the room there was also another concrete structure. It looked like a big skateboarding ramp. I thought the whole interior design of the place was spectacular and unique. I would love to work in an environment like that, so inspiring and relaxing and effortless at the same time.
As soon as we walked up the stairs to the office floor I noticed something familiar: their lampshades were made of Marimekko fabrics!! 😀 Marimekko is a Finnsih design house famous for their fabric designs.
“Founded in 1951 by a visionary woman Armi Ratia, Marimekko is said to be one of the world’s first real lifestyle brands combining fashion, bags and accessories as well as home decoration into one unique point of view.” –Marimekko website UK
I think every Finn recognizes Marimekko anywhere they see it. It only took me seconds to notice their iconic flower print “Unikko”. I feel proud as a Finn to see a big company like Mother to use Finnish designs. And not only they have used it for the lamps, Mother also has a sample of all Marimekko fabric designs. That’s pretty cool.
Plus even my pencil case is by Marimekko :’D
